Help support our friends in Israel in their time of need.
Today, we ventured into the heart of Aswan, immersing ourselves in its rich history and breathtaking landscapes.
After a 3 AM wake-up call to catch our flight to Aswan, we began our day at the Unfinished Obelisk, set within a sprawling quarry of pink granite. This colossal monument, had it been completed, would have been the largest obelisk ever erected in ancient Egypt. However, a significant crack appeared during its carving, leading to its abandonment. Seeing the obelisk in situ provided us with profound insights into the stone-working techniques of ancient artisans and the immense challenges they faced.
Next, we journeyed to Sehel Island, located approximately 2 kilometers south of Elephantine Island. This island is renowned for its numerous inscriptions carved into granite boulders, left by travelers marking the start or end of their journeys to Nubia. One of the most notable carvings is the Famine Stela, which narrates a seven-year drought during King Djoser's reign and his consultation with the deity Khnum to restore the Nile's inundation. Talking among these ancient texts, we felt a deep connection to the travelers and scribes of millennia past.
Reflecting on today's explorations, we gained a deeper appreciation for Aswan's pivotal role in ancient Egypt's history, both as a center of commerce and a spiritual nexus. The remnants of its past continue to tell stories of innovation, devotion, and the enduring relationship between the Egyptians and the Nile.
Tomorrow, we look forward to further adventures as we continue our journey through this timeless land.
Until then!
