Day 02 - Majestic Wonders of Cairo – The Pyramids, Sphinx, and NMEC

Today was nothing short of awe-inspiring as we delved into the heart of ancient Egypt, exploring some of its most iconic landmarks.

Our journey began at the legendary Giza Plateau, home to the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure. Standing before these colossal structures, we were struck by their sheer scale and the precision of their construction. It's one thing to read about the pyramids, but witnessing them firsthand is an experience beyond words. To think that Abraham gazed at these pyramids as he traipsed across the land is mind blowing. At the pyramids we appreciated the amazing workman’s skills at grinding down the granite casing. Dr. C. explained the process and even pointed out that the interior corner stones were also filed down.

Just a short walk (or bus ride) from the pyramids lies the enigmatic Great Sphinx, with the body of a lion and the head believed to represent Pharaoh Khafre. The Sphinx has stood guard over the Giza Plateau for millennia, and its mysterious expression left us pondering the secrets it might hold.

In front of the Sphinx Dr. C. gave us a quick talk about the legendary Dream Stela placed by Thutmose IV. Security cut him off but didn’t arrest him. Close call!

We enjoyed afternoon coffee with a view of the pyramids and a few of us met the camels.

In the afternoon, we visited the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Cairo. This modern museum offers a comprehensive overview of Egypt's rich history, from prehistoric times through the pharaonic periods and beyond. One of the highlights was the Royal Mummies Hall, where we came face-to-face with some of Egypt's most illustrious rulers. The royal mummy hall at NMEC had many of us moved, as we considered the lives, the history, and the impact of the pharaohs. The museum's exhibits are thoughtfully curated, providing deep insights into the daily lives, beliefs, and achievements of ancient Egyptians.

Reflecting on today's adventures, we are filled with admiration for the ingenuity and artistry of a civilization that continues to captivate the world. Tomorrow promises more discoveries as we continue our exploration of this timeless land.

Until then!
