Help support our friends in Israel in their time of need.
Today was a remarkable blend of history and serenity as we sailed along the Nile, visiting two of Egypt's most intriguing islands.
Our first stop was Sehel Island, located approximately 2 kilometers south of Elephantine Island. This island is renowned for its numerous inscriptions carved into granite boulders, left by travelers marking the start or end of their journeys to Nubia. One of the most notable carvings is the Famine Stela, which narrates a seven-year drought during King Djoser's reign and his consultation with the deity Khnum to restore the Nile's inundation.
Next was Elephantine Island, the largest in the Aswan archipelago. Historically, this island served as a military stronghold and a major trading hub, marking Egypt's southern border. It was also believed to be the dwelling place of Khnum, the ram-headed god of the cataracts, who controlled the Nile's waters. Exploring the island, we visited the ruins of the Temple of Khnum and observed one of Egypt's ancient nilometers, devices used to measure the Nile's water levels during the annual flood season. The island's rich history and strategic significance were palpable as we wandered its terrain.
Our final destination was the Temple of Kom Ombo, unique double temple dedicated to two deities: Sobek, the crocodile god, and Horus the Elder (Haroeris), the falcon-headed god. Built during the Ptolemaic dynasty between 180–47 BC, the temple's symmetrical design features duplicate sanctuaries, halls, and rooms for each god. This dual dedication is rare in Egyptian architecture and provided fascinating insights into the religious practices of the time. One of the highlights was the display of mummified crocodiles in the adjacent Crocodile Museum, underscoring the reverence ancient Egyptians had for Sobek.
As the sun set, we returned to our cruise ship witnessing a spectacular sunset beholding the crescent moon at the start of Ramadan.
The day's explorations left us in awe of ancient Egypt's architectural prowess and deep spiritual traditions. Tomorrow promises more adventures as we continue our journey through this timeless land.
Until then!
