Stronghold and Living Water

This morning started at 6:30AM with a mud-covered float in the Dead Sea. Once we collected our salt crystals, we were off to the fortress of Masada which means 'stronghold'. (Scholarly note: dont skip over names and places in the bible. They all have a specific meaning and can fill in holes of knowledge). Although Masada is not mentioned in the bible, the historical context of the Zealots and their passion should not be overlooked. In the end, they still missed the mark with the true Messiah. The reason we climb Mesada is to remember that: Mesada shall not fall again! A short cable ride down back to flat ground, we boarded the bus and headed to Ein Gedi!

Masada

The summit of Masada sits 190 feet (59 m) above sea level and about 1,500 feet (470 m) above the level of the Dead Sea. The mountain itself is 1950 feet (610 m) long, 650 feet (200 m) wide, 4,250 feet (1330 m) in circumference, and encompasses 23 acres. The “Snake Path” climbs 900 feet (280 m) in elevation. From the west, the difference in height is 225 feet (70 m).

"As a deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God." Psalm 42:1-2. David understands the importance of The Living Water which is our God in heaven and protecter. This particular location is a beautiful picture to open our eyes in knowing that God is our living water even in the desert moments. After enjoying the peaceful moment, we loaded the bus and headed to Qumran.

Ein Gedi

En Gedi is the largest oasis along the western shore of the Dead Sea. The springs here have allowed nearly continuous inhabitation of the site since the Chalcolithic period. The area was allotted to the tribe of Judah, and was famous in the time of Solomon (Josh 15:62). Today the Israeli kibbutz of En Gedi sits along the southern bank of the Nahal Arugot.

DEAD SEA SCROLLS. In 1947 the Dead Sea Scrolls were found at Qumran in 11 caves. These are not mentioned in the bible but are still one of the greatest archaeological finds in history! Hundreds of scrolls were found here in tact providing that Qumran was a dry climate preserving the scrolls for about a thousand years.

God works in such intricate ways and builds a story for us to forever pursue Him with the living word of God.

And Brenda's luggage has finally been reunited with her! Hooray!

Qumran

10 miles south of Jericho, Qumran was on a “dead-end street” and provided a perfect location for the isolationist sect of the Essenes to live.

The site was excavated by Catholic priest Roland deVaux from 1953-56. More recent excavations of the site have taken place under the direction of Hanan Eshel.
