Day 08 - Acropolis, Mars Hill, Acropolis Museum

Kaili Merida!!!

(that’s hello in Greece). We are off in the bus after meeting our guide, Maria. Several of us noticed graffiti everywhere on the city building. I took a picture of a fish on the side of the building. That’s the kind of graffiti I like.

The Acropolis is a fortified rock formation while the Parthenon is one of the many temples that stood on the top of the rock. Parthenon being the most prominent building, held a huge gold statue of the ancient god Athena. Goodness, she was one busy girl!! The statue was destroyed by the Persians. The building through the centuries has been turned into a mosque, and then a church . Now it’s a tourist attraction, and one of the most iconic buildings in the world. We then visited the museum that held the remnants and the reconstructed vision of what it used to look like according to the archaeologist. What stood out more to me was an unassuming outcrop of rock next to the Acropolis called the Areopolis (Mars Hill). The apostle Paul gave his famous plea to the Athens intelligent elite. He told them of the “unknown god” they served. Pastor Peter gave a talk at the base of the Acropolis encouraging us to find common ground with the people God has put in our lives. Just as Paul tried to reason with them. May we all be discontent and brave enough to witness to the people God loves.
