Help support our friends in Israel in their time of need.
Today, our journey through Turkey continued as we delved deeper into the heart of early Christian history, exploring two of the Seven Churches of Revelation. The day was not just a journey through ancient ruins but also a spiritual exploration, guided by Pastor Luke's insights into the New Testament.
Morning at Sardis
Our day began at the ancient city of Sardis, once a thriving capital of the Lydian Kingdom and a significant city in Roman times. Known for its wealth and the place where coinage was invented, Sardis holds a prominent place in both history and the Bible as one of the Seven Churches of Revelation.
Amidst the ancient ruins of Sardis, with the backdrop of one of the largest gymnasiums where athletes once trained, Pastor Luke brought our focus to a poignant passage from 1 Timothy 4:7-10 and Revelation 3. This scripture, nestled within the context of Paul’s advice to his young protégé Timothy, resonated deeply within the historic and spiritual ambiance that surrounded us.
“Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance. That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe.”
Pastor Luke emphasized the distinction Paul makes between physical and spiritual training. In the very place where ancient athletes dedicated themselves to physical excellence, we were reminded of the greater importance of spiritual discipline. The physical training undertaken by the athletes of Sardis held some value, as it does today, promoting health and discipline. However, Paul’s words underscored that training in godliness transcends the immediate benefits of physical fitness, offering eternal rewards and promises for both the present life and the life to come.
This message was particularly poignant as we stood in a place where the physical prowess of individuals was once celebrated above all. The ruins around us, while inspiring in their grandeur, served as a stark reminder of the temporal nature of such achievements. In contrast, the godliness Paul speaks of in 1 Timothy represents an enduring legacy, one that impacts our lives on a much deeper level and extends beyond our earthly existence.
Afternoon at Pergamum
Our journey continued to Pergamum, an ancient Greek city that later became a major Roman capital. The city's acropolis, perched 1600 feet above sea level, was reached by a tram, lifting us into the realms of history and offering breathtaking views of the Mediterranean.
Pergamum was a center for Greek and Roman worship, with temples dedicated to various gods and even Caesar. It was here, amidst the ruins that speak of a city devoted to many gods, that we read Revelation 2. Pastor Luke highlighted the contrasts between the gods of Pergamum and Jesus Christ, emphasizing the latter's definitive 'I Am' statements in the Gospel of John.
We reflected on Colossians 2, focusing on spiritual fullness in Christ, surrounded by the remnants of a city that once sought fulfillment in myriad deities and imperial cults. The archaeological history of Pergamum's acropolis is rich, featuring the Altar of Zeus, the Temple of Trajan, and the world-renowned Pergamum Library, which once rivaled Alexandria's. These remnants of a bygone era served as powerful backdrops to our spiritual reflections, underscoring the transient nature of earthly power and the eternal kingdom of Christ.
Today's journey through Sardis and Pergamum was a blend of history, archaeology, and spirituality. As we walked the paths of ancient Christians, reflecting on scriptures and the steadfastness of faith in the face of idolatry and persecution, we were reminded of the enduring message of hope and salvation. The ancient stones spoke not just of empires and cultures long gone but of the unchanging nature of God's love and the truth of His Word.
