Day 02 - Ancient Egypt: The Pyramids & the Old Kingdom: Grand Egyptian Museum

For our second day in Egypt, we visited the National Museum of Civilization. This museum is less than two years old and had some incredible treasures for us to see from the many eras of Egyptian history, including mummies! Our guide Osama is doing a wonderful job explaining and teaching us.

After the first museum, we toured the The Egyptian Museum in Cairo which was built in 1901. It houses the largest collection of Egyptian antiquities in the world* at over 120,000 items, with a representative amount on display. Among its masterpieces are Pharaoh Tutankhamun's treasure, including its iconic gold burial mask, one of the best-known works of art in the world and a prominent symbol of ancient Egypt. *(the Grand Egyptian Museum will be much larger and hold many more artifacts but is still under final construction).

Later in the afternoon we flew to ancient Thebes, modern day Luxor, over 400 miles south of Cairo. We checked in at the beautiful Nile River Palace hotel for a good meal and well-earned sleep. We can't wait to see some amazing temples tomorrow in Luxor and hope this beautiful weather continues.
