How life was for Jesus and the disciples

It has been week since we left the parking lot at North Coast Church, seems like so much longer! Maybe because Ronan, Paul, Connor, Bree and Rich have taken us back in time and made the people, towns, cities and stories we have read about all our lives come alive. We were told that, time and time again before we left, but to actually experience it is unbelievable!

Today we stood in the spot that King Saul’s body was put on display by the Philistines when they took over the region. We were taught about why the take over of this region was so significant and what it must have taken for David to reclaim and rebuild it. We stood in the ancient ruins of the Roman city of Schytopholis and then traveled to the coast of the Mediterranean to the city of Caesarea Maritima where King Herod not only built his palace but built an entire harbor for international trade.

Beth Shean

Located 17 miles (27 km) south of the Sea of Galilee, Beth Shean is situated at the strategic junction of the Harod and Jordan Valleys. The fertility of the land and the abundance of water led the Jewish sages to say, “If the Garden of Eden is in the land of Israel, then its gate is Beth Shean.” It is no surprise then that the site has been almost continuously settled from the Chalcolithic period to the present.

Sometimes when we listen to our guide we wonder where in the heck he is going with all of the historical details that he is giving us, then, just like Chris or Larry or Christopher, BAM!!! You understand how life was for Jesus and the disciples, why he chose the spots he did to teach each lesson.

The days can be grueling, the heat can easily wear on you but personally we are glad that we are being pushed to take it all in.

Ending the teaching today at the beautiful coast of the Mediterranean was refreshing, rejuvenating and made us feel a little like we were back at the beach in Oceanside or Carlsbad. Each day the stories and experiences are building up to where we are headed now - Jerusalem! Can’t wait to see what the last four days have in store for us!

Caesarea Maritima

The city and harbor were built under Herod the Great during c. 22–10 BC near the site of a former Phoenician naval station known as Stratonos pyrgos (Στράτωνος πύργος).[2] It later became the provincial capital of Roman Judea, Roman Syria Palaestina and Byzantine Palaestina Prima provinces. The city was populated throughout the 1st to 6th centuries CE and became an important early center of Christianity during the Byzantine period, but was mostly abandoned following the Muslim conquest of 640. It was re-fortified by the Crusaders, and finally slighted by the Mamluks in 1265.
