By the hand of God

So day 2 came and went, and all I can say is…. MASADA! We climbed Masada! It was amazing. It was gorgeous. It was breathtaking. We learned and discussed 5 different stories while there and all were powerful and good food for the soul.

Masada

The summit of Masada sits 190 feet (59 m) above sea level and about 1,500 feet (470 m) above the level of the Dead Sea. The mountain itself is 1950 feet (610 m) long, 650 feet (200 m) wide, 4,250 feet (1330 m) in circumference, and encompasses 23 acres. The “Snake Path” climbs 900 feet (280 m) in elevation. From the west, the difference in height is 225 feet (70 m).

We also hiked through the Makhtesh Desert. There are 3 kinds of deserts: ones you can survive in alone, ones you can survive in with help, and ones you can’t survive in even with help. Well, Makhtesh was one you couldn’t survive in even with help. We learned that Moses took the Israelites through a desert like the one we hiked for 40 years. Yep, I said 40 YEARS! You couldn’t survive in the Makhtesh for 4 days, MUCH LESS 40 YEARS…. that could only be done by the hand of God for sure!

Makhtesh Ramon

Machtesh Ramon is the most spectacular geological sight in the country. It is a window into the geological formation of the earth. The crater is 24 miles (40 km) long, 5 miles (8 km) wide, and 1600 feet (500 m) deep. The term machtesh is a geological term which means “mortar” as in mortar and pestle. Machtesh Qatan (Small) and Gadol (Large) look like mortar bowls in which grains are pounded with a pestle. This look is true of the big and little craters but not necessarily of Machtesh Ramon which is stretched out and narrow at one end.

We visited Beersheba and had an awesome tent experience. And finally at the end of the evening, we arrived to our hotel and walked to the beach and got in the Dead Sea (Salt Sea). Only being able to float because of the high salt content, was really cool!

We learned and saw so much again today and for that we are truly grateful. Excited for what God will bring tomorrow. Jesus be glorified!
