Living Stones

Today was our first day with feet on the ground and boy was it wonderful! We journeyed to five amazing places, Adullam, Azekah, Beth-Shemesh, Gezer, and Lachish.

At each stop we read and studied scripture and learned the Biblical geography which then brought clarity and really made the words come to life. We also crawled in underground caves, we walked down into an old cistern, we climbed hills and mountains, we walked through a grape vineyard.... that’s just to name a few.

In Gezer, we learned about Dead Stones (pictured below) and how we as disciples are supposed to be Living Stones for Christ. Which one are you?

Gezer

Situated near the International Coastal Highway and guarding the primary route into the Israelite hill country, Gezer was one of the most strategic cities in the Canaanite and Israelite periods. Gezer is a prominent 33-acre site that overlooked the Aijalon Valley and the road leading through it to Jerusalem. The tel was identified as biblical Gezer in 1871 by C. Clermont-Ganneau who two years later found the first of many boundary stones inscribed with the city’s name.

Walking through the vineyards at Lachish, Pastor Brian reminded us of John 15:1-7. Jesus is the vine and we are the branches. We also learned about Hezekiah.

Beth-Shemesh is where we discussed Sampson, who’s name means light. He eventually fell in love with Delilah, who’s name means dark, now that’s something to think about.

Beth Shemesh

A border city between Judah and Dan, Beth Shemesh was given to the Levites. Beth Shemesh was the most important Israelite city in the Sorek Valley as it watched both east-west traffic through the Sorek Valley and north-south traffic along the “Diagonal Route.” Recent excavations have shown a thriving city here from the Middle Bronze Age through the Iron II period.

After a long day, we ride our bus back to our hotel tonight, tired as all get out, but our hearts and minds are full! Full of goodness, full of truth, and looking forward to God’s adventures tomorrow. Lord, we thank you for today, and we give you our hearts again tomorrow.

We still feel like we have to pinch ourselves.... WE ARE IN ISREAL! Jesus be glorified!
