Water is Life

Walking into Masada made me appreciate the architecture of what was once there and how large the property was. What I took out of this site was the heroism that once fled there from the Roman Empire. Only a couple hundred Jews held out within the citadel against thousands of Roman soldiers below. The Roman army built a siege ramp and began attacking the walls with a battering ram. Preferring death over being made slaves, the Jews inside committed suicide.

Masada

The summit of Masada sits 190 feet (59 m) above sea level and about 1,500 feet (470 m) above the level of the Dead Sea. The mountain itself is 1950 feet (610 m) long, 650 feet (200 m) wide, 4,250 feet (1330 m) in circumference, and encompasses 23 acres. The “Snake Path” climbs 900 feet (280 m) in elevation. From the west, the difference in height is 225 feet (70 m).

After Masada we had the chance to go to Ein Gedi, which is locally known as Wadi David or David’s Water. The Bible tells us that David ran and hid from Saul in a cave in the wild. Mountains and cliffs surround this beautiful area; with the clearest water I have ever seen flowing through the middle. We continued to hike higher and higher along narrow pathways and up natural and man-made steps. When we finally reached the top, we found a beautiful cave with a waterfall among the cliffs. I couldn’t help but wonder if David had also splashed in this water and admired God’s creation from here too.

Before ending the day at the Sea of Galilee, we made a brief stop at the place where it is believed John the Baptist baptized Jesus in the Jordan River.

Ein Gedi

En Gedi is the largest oasis along the western shore of the Dead Sea. The springs here have allowed nearly continuous inhabitation of the site since the Chalcolithic period. The area was allotted to the tribe of Judah, and was famous in the time of Solomon (Josh 15:62). Today the Israeli kibbutz of En Gedi sits along the southern bank of the Nahal Arugot.
