Help support our friends in Israel in their time of need.
Driving from the hotel to Katzrin is like driving up the I-5 in the Central Valley, with rolling hills, oak trees, and farms dotting the landscape. Katzrin was definitely our favorite stop of the day! Our period guide, Elizabeth, brought 1st Century living to life. A restored house showed us how the stone houses during the time of Jesus would have been constructed.
The ancient Jewish farming village of Katzrin was built around a spring, which still flows. Although there were standing ruins on the site, archaeological excavations have increased the number of accessible ancient buildings. An ancient synagogue was discovered in 1967 and excavated between 1971 and 1984. Other parts of the village were excavated beginning in 1983. Some of the buildings have been reconstructed on their ancient foundations and furnished with replicas of household goods and tools
Caesarea Philippi is a pagan town dedicated to the pagan god, Pan. It was a beautiful site with flowing water, but it was not a place where a Jew would have gone because of the pagan worship practices in this area. In the area outside of this site is where Jesus predicts his own death and resurrection to his disciples. It’s unfortunate that the pagans controlled this beautiful area.
This abundant water supply has made the area very fertile and attractive for religious worship. Numerous temples were built at this city in the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
Ancient Dan is an interesting location, where you can see three different countries at once: Lebanon, Syria, and Israel. You can certainly understand why there have been border disputes. The city nearby city of Mrar is half in Lebanon and half in Israel. I can’t imagine what it would be like to have a border between countries running right through the middle of Santa Clarita!

On the northern frontier of the kingdom, Dan was particularly well fortified. This gatehouse was built in the ninth century BCE, probably by Ahab, and is part of a series of gateways discovered.
