After a few delays and challenges we arrived safely in Rome. Loading immediately on the tour bus, we headed off for a wonderful adventure through the ancient city, eating at little pizzeria places on our way to the Colosseum.
Ahhh...the magnificent Colosseum. It's majesty and history was wonderful to behold, transporting us all back to a time we never saw but often imagined. One interesting tidbit we learned was that contrary to popular teaching, Christians were probably not martyred in the Colosseum as it was an entertainment venue, not one for punishment. The gladiators were revered, not unlike our professional athletes today, and were trained at great expense.
Next we visited the Basilica di S. Clemente retracing the different levels of early churches built on top of one another. After Pastor Wayne's teaching and sharing some very interesting theories about how those churches came about, we all sang a song in unison sharing a very special moment together.
The thought for the day: "Tradition is the living faith of the dead. Traditionalism is the dead faith of the living." - Jarislav Pelkin, The Emerging Catholic Tradition.
