Day 08 - Egypt Through the Ages: Grand Egyptian Museum

We began our day with an early flight  from Luxor. The quick flight placed us in Cairo around 10 AM.

We had the privilege of visiting the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), state-of-the-art facility located near the Giza Plateau. Although the museum is not yet fully open, it currently offers access to several galleries and exhibits.

Upon entering, we were greeted by the impressive statue of Ramses II in the grand atrium. The museum's design seamlessly blends modern architecture with ancient artifacts, providing a fresh perspective on Egypt's rich history. We explored the open galleries, which are arranged chronologically, showcasing artifacts spanning 3,000 years. Highlights included the relocated treasures of Queen Hetepheres. While some of the most anticipated exhibits such as the golden mask and primary funerary items of King Tutankhamun are not yet on display, the available collections provided a comprehensive overview of Egypt's ancient civilization. The museum's layout and presentation offered a deeper understanding of the cultural and historical contexts of the artifacts.

After our inspiring visit to the Grand Egyptian Museum, we headed to Cheristo Seafood Restaurant for lunch, where we enjoyed a breathtaking view of the Great Pyramids of Giza. The open-air rooftop setting was the perfect way to wrap up our tour journey!

Finally, we made our way to the Radisson Blu Hotel Cairo Heliopolis, conveniently located near Cairo International Airport, for dinner and an evening stay, allowing us to rest before our 2 AM flight to Istanbul.

Reflecting on today’s experiences, we were struck by the seamless connection between Egypt’s ancient past and its present. The Grand Egyptian Museum stands as a testament to the nation’s dedication to preserving and showcasing its unparalleled heritage.

As our incredible journey through Egypt comes to an end, we leave with a deeper appreciation for its rich history, breathtaking monuments, and enduring legacy. The memories we’ve made will stay with us for a lifetime.

Until we meet again—Ma'a Salama, Egypt!
