Day 06 - Luxor: Medinet Habu, Colossi of Memnon, Hatshepsut's Temple, Alabaster Shop

Today was a journey through time as we explored some of Luxor's most iconic sites, each offering a unique window into Egypt's illustrious past.

Our day began as  we ventured to Medinet Habu, the mortuary temple of Pharaoh Ramesses III. This vast complex resembled a fortified town, with temples, palaces, chapels, and residential neighborhoods. The towering pylons and well-preserved reliefs vividly depicted the king's military campaigns and religious rituals, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of the New Kingdom.

Next a visit to the Colossi of Memnon, two imposing stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III that have survived for almost 3,400 years.hese remarkable figures once stood guard at the entrance of Amenhotep’s mortuary temple, which now lies mostly in ruins.

Our journey continued to the majestic Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari.  This architectural marvel, with its terraces seamlessly blending into the limestone cliffs, stands as a testament to the reign of one of Egypt's few female pharaohs. Recent archaeological discoveries have unveiled over 1,000 decorated stone blocks from the temple, shedding new light on its original splendor.

Our day concluded with a visit to a local alabaster workshop; there, skilled artisans demonstrated the traditional methods of crafting this translucent stone into exquisite vessels and statues. It was a delightful experience to witness the continuation of ancient craftsmanship and to support the local community by purchasing some of these beautiful hand-made pieces. Evening Reflections

Tomorrow promises more discoveries as we continue our exploration of this timeless land!
