Day 05 - Galilee: Magdala, Capernaum, Chorazin, Ancient Boat (Ginosar), Galilee Boat Ride

Day Five: Around the Sea Where It Happened

Today was one of those days where the pages of the Gospels felt very close. We began at Magdala, the hometown of Mary Magdalene and one of the newest excavation sites in the Galilee region. There we explored a first-century synagogue that stands independently from later structures, a rare find that helps us imagine what synagogue life looked like in the time of Jesus. We also learned about the salted fish industry that once operated there, reminding us that this region was not only spiritual ground but also a working, commercial hub.

Inside the chapel at Magdala, the artwork portraying scenes from Jesus’ ministry in Galilee
helped frame the day. Many of the events we read in the Gospels unfolded within walking
distance of where we stood.

From there, we traveled to Capernaum, often called Jesus’ home base during His Galilean
ministry. Even with fog hanging over the northern shoreline, we were able to orient ourselves and consider how central this town was for the spread of the Gospel. Major trade routes passed nearby, making it a strategic place for teaching and movement. We gathered around the synagogue ruins, which sit on a first century foundation beneath later fourth- century remains. Teaching there helped us picture Jesus reading and teaching in that very setting. We then discussed the traditional site of Peter’s house and the archaeological evidence suggesting that it functioned as a place of worship and gathering as early as 50 AD, eventually becoming the foundation for a Byzantine church. Standing there, imagining Jesus interacting with residents, visitors, and even Roman centurions, made the stories feel grounded and real. We sang a couple of worship songs together, joining our voices with the long history of worship that has taken place in that location.

A short drive brought us to Chorazin for further reflection on insulas and synagogue life. We
enjoyed a picnic lunch overlooking the region and were reminded of Jesus’ warning to Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum regarding how they responded to the light they had received. It was a sobering moment to consider proximity to Jesus without true response.
From there, we headed to the Mount of Beatitudes. We received a short overview of the Sermon on the Mount, both historically and literarily, and then were given time to sit and read Matthew 5 through 7 quietly. Looking out over the Sea of Galilee while reading those words adds texture to familiar passages.

The day concluded at Ginosar, where we viewed the first century fishing boat often called the Jesus boat, discovered in the Sea of Galilee in 1986. Shortly after, we boarded our own boat and crossed the lake. For about twenty five minutes we reflected, sang worship songs, and listened to teaching from Mark 4 on Jesus calming the storm. We closed in small groups for prayer before watching one of the boat crew cast fishing nets into the water on both sides, a simple act that connected us again to the daily rhythms of first century life.
Rain came and went throughout the day, yet it always seemed to pause when we were outside walking or teaching.

Personal Reflection from the Group:

Erik Van Asch -
Like the woman who reached out in faith and touched the edge of Jesus’ robe and was healed, even though many others were pressing in around Him, I am reminded that proximity is not the same as faith. People were near Jesus that day. Many were touching Him in the crowd. But only one reached out believing.

It makes me think about our own lives. Whether we are at a Sunrise church service, in
community group, during personal quiet time, or even here in Israel where Christ once walked, we always have the opportunity to approach Him in faith. We can “really” reach out to Him. And when we do, healing can come. Not just physically, but in the deep internal places that need change, forgiveness, and renewal. No matter where we are, we are invited to draw near.

A Closing Reflection

Today we walked through towns where Jesus taught, healed, and called disciples. We stood in synagogues, read His words overlooking the sea, and sailed across waters where storms once rose. Mark 4:39 says, “He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.” The same Jesus who taught on these hills and calmed these waters still speaks into our storms today.
