Day 08 - Corinth, Giannikos Winery, Free Time

Our last day was filled with biblical insights, as Acts 17 and the Book of 1st and 2nd Corinthians came to life in full color. We spent over three hours walking around the ancient city of Corinth with the Bible in hand. It’s amazing how the historical, geographical, and cultural realities shines light on Scripture.

At every turn, another part of Scripture exploded with another layer of understanding. The Apostle Paul draws from Corinth’s everyday experiences and life. Throughout these writings, Paul integrates history, pottery, music, anatomy, sacrificial votives, common trades, athletics, temple structures, Aphrodite, Asclepius, Apollo, politicians, meat markets, and so much more.

One of the highlights of the site came just after we looked at 1 Corinthians 11. In this passage the Apostle Paul addresses this church’s struggle with disunity and discrimination. It is in this context that Paul gives instructions regarding the Lord’s Table (or Communion). As we reflected on these words, we took communion together. It was a powerful experience to share bread and the cup in this place.

Near the end of our time at the site, we found ourselves in front of another piece of Corinth’s ancient history. We were learning about the Ithmus Games, second only to the Olympic Games, that originated here in Corinth. What’s amazing, is without knowing it, we had been standing on the ancient starting line the whole time! The line dates back to 500 BC.

Measuring about 12 meters long, the line had starting positions for 12 runners. Similar to modern-day sprinter blocks, it had front and rear toe grooves cut into the limestone blocks. These grooves were embedded in the ground and covered with a thin plaster coat. The line was curved to allow a staggered start.

With great passion, we were challenged to “finish the race” God has for each of us. Our trip may be wrapping up, but the next leg of our race is just beginning.

May we finish well…!

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my bodyand make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. (1 Corinthians 9:24-27 NIV)
