Day 03 - Hierapolis & Laodicea

We had a fabulous day, beginning to end! We started the day watching the sun come up while overlooking the city, white calcified cliffs and the surrounding mountains in a hot air balloon.

We are in the popular tourist site of Hierapolis, which features spectacular calcified cliffs and the remains of the ancient city which we were able to explore during the morning. The theater at Hierapolis is an impressive structure originally built by Greeks and renovated by the Romans. This city is at a crossroads in close proximity to Laodicea and Colossae (less than a day's journey). We were impressed by how advanced the city was, with latrines by the city gate, a water system bringing in water to the city through a sophisticated aqueduct system and sewer system underground.

Our afternoon visit to Laodicea provided contrast as this city is in the early stages of excavation. Laodicea contains two massive amphitheaters, one which is close to fully restored and the other which has only begun work. The church which has been partially restored contained indoor toilet facilities and baptismal corridor. Paul, John and Philip were all active in ministry in this area, and we were able to walk the streets they traveled and sit on the same steps they say on.

We focused of the book of Philemon and Revelation's letter to the church of Laodicea. With the aqueduct system bringing cold water for every day living and the nearby hot springs providing medicinal healing, each has a valuable purpose. However, lukewarm water has no use, and the thought of drinking warm water would result in us spitting the water out. We want to be useful in society, but more importantly useful in the work of Christ.

Every day here brings new insight on the early church and provides understanding of the life of the people of that time in history. I can't wait to see what the next few days will teach us!
