Day 04 - Eisenach/Coburg/Nuremberg

Another day is over, and we lay our heads down in Nuremberg, Bavaria, after a long day.

We woke up in Eisenach, having seen the Warburg yesterday, we visited the Luther House, where Ursula was able to get us in an hour early!

After that, we went to St. George’s Church, where Johann Sebastian Bach was baptized. As luck would have it, as we entered, the organist began playing. It was a beautiful moment to reflect after the morning devotional.

In the devotional, Dan stood under a rainbow as it began to rain. As he spoke and we huddled for shelter, he discussed the idea of the day: Imputation. The idea was central to Luther’s understanding of the Gospel. Luther believed that the Bible taught that by faith we are gifted the righteousness of Christ. We cannot earn “extra” grace as it isn’t a substance, but rather the disposition of God towards us. He views us graciously and has sent his son, to whom we can be united by faith. A timely bell rang as he finished his point.

We then drove to Coburg to visit the massive Veste Coburg (Coburg Castle), where Luther stayed in 1530 as his compatriots presented the Augsburg Confession to the Emperor.

From there, we went to Nuremberg for the night- we saw the castle and learned about the city’s favorite son: Albrecht Dürer. Dürer was a leading painter in the early Renaissance, and he lived long enough to hear of Luther’s movement. He was generally appreciative of him.
