Day 07 - Coastal Plain: Megiddo, Mt. Carmel, Caesarea Maritima, Rabbinic Tunnels

After another wonderful breakfast, our amazing tour guide Ronen (aka Mayor of Ronenville, formerly Tiberius) arranged a tour of the Sea of Galilee Boat Museum. During a drought in the 80’s, two brothers were fishing and found some Roman nails and then the remains of an old wooden structure under the mud. This led to a years-long excavation project to exhume the structure which turned out to be a 30 ft. fishing boat that may have been from the time that Jesus walked the earth and calmed the seas. Thankfully the Israel leadership built a multi-million dollar museum around this amazing artifact. Definitely worth the visit if you ever are near the Nof Ginosar Kabutz on the west coast of The Sea of Galilee.

Our group ventured southwest from this point and left the Galilee region to visit a beautiful site called Megiddo. Here we learned the history of this amazing city including the work of King Solomon to fortify and strengthen the city. We discovered the ways of compromise and distancing from the commands found in Deuteronomy, where a king of Israel was not to acquire much wealth or horses or wives, yet Solomon sprinted in that direction. We discussed pagan sacrifice and the evils of Baal worship, which was most significant in the time of Ahab. This related to our next stop, which was Carmel, where we learned how Elijah confronted the Baal worship and had a mighty showdown which ultimately had the nation of Israel recognizing “The LORD is God,” or “ELIJAH!” To finish this big day we went to Caesarea by the Sea, an incredible ancient city built by King Herod. Among other marvels, this city featured a hippodrome, theater, an aqueduct, an impressive palace with fresh and saltwater pools, and harbor built out into the ocean. The city was ultimately destroyed by Rome and the marble of the buildings was tossed into the sea. Our group was able to walk along the shore and pick up pieces of marble among the sea shells. It seems that while King Herod was building for his own glory, what he built was not able to stand the test of time. Meanwhile, God’s church is still advancing and expanding built on the cornerstone of Christ.
