Help support our friends in Israel in their time of need.
Today was a lighter day. We've transitioned from ancient ruins into a cultural experience of Turkey. We've experienced Turkey as a culture of kindness. Today we were hosted by artisans who are very skilled at making beautiful Turkish rugs. What an experience! They also hosted us for lunch. I spied one of the ladies making our meal in the kitchen with great care. We met ladies who taught us how to use their looms and demonstrate their craft. The Union which they are a part of provides for them and even teaches younger artisans the craft and skill to carry on this old tradition. Pergamum is known worldwide for their Turkish rugs. It was a pleasure to be with them today.
Before our rug experience, we wrapped up our tour of Pergamum. We toured lower Pergamum and saw their extensive medical structures including special bathing areas, spas, and fountains. In desperation, people would trek to Pergamum & offer sacrifices to Asclepius, the god of healing.
We were amazed to discover (either today or yesterday) a small pillar here in Pergamum which has an inscription to honor an "unknown God." Paul addressed the people's desire to avoid displeasing even an "Unknown God" & explains to them Who the true God is. Amazing to see this small pillar and relate it to Scripture we know.
To end the day, we swam in the Aegean Sea. Our wonderful tour guide, Ozan, invited his two teenage sons to join us. It was a pleasure to meet them.
I'll close with this scripture applicable to our tour today–
O Lord, if you heal me, I will be truly healed;
if you save me, I will be truly saved.
My praises are for you alone!
Jeremiah 17:14
