Today we logged nearly 14,000 steps, but more than distance, we covered centuries.
We walked through Jerusalem, moving back and forth through time as if stepping into a living time capsule. From the earliest days of the city to kings, prophets, pilgrims, and ultimately Jesus Himself, the story unfolded beneath our feet.
Our journey began in the City of David, where Jerusalem first took shape. We reflected on King David, who captured the city by ascending through its water system, entering what seemed impenetrable. This was not only military strategy, but theology in motion: God establishing His chosen king in His chosen city.
We traced the story forward to King Hezekiah, who, facing invasion, redirected Jerusalem’s water supply by carving a tunnel some 533 meters through solid rock. This engineering feat channeled water into a large pool with on the city walls. Recent excavation continue to shed light what all this looked like.
We, then we followed the story into the life of Jesus.
Here, Jesus healed blind men.
From the lower city, our journey ascended, toward rejection and suffering, at the place of crucifixion. The geography itself preaches. Movement upward toward sacrifice. Outside the city toward redemption.
We ended the day sitting on the Southern Steps, where pilgrims once ascended into the Temple courts and where the events of Pentecost unfolded. Here, prayers were sung, Psalms were recited. And here, the Spirit of God fell, igniting the Church and sending the gospel into the world.
All of these stories converged. David. Hezekiah. Jesus. Pentecost. Along with countless unnamed worshipers who walked these same stones.
As we reflected, one truth rose above the rest.
God has always been pursuing His people. From the opening pages of Scripture to the final promises.
From the earliest moments of our lives until now.
God pursues. God draws. God invites.
He calls us to step into His presence, to relate to Him face to face, and to know Him personally.
To walk through Jerusalem with Bible in hand is to step into the world of the Bible. And, when you step into the world of the Bible, the words of the Bible come alive.
