Today was our first full day on the ground for the Jordan and Israel Signature Tour, and we stepped immediately into a pivotal hinge of the biblical story.
We stood on Mount Nebo, looking into the Promised Land with Moses. From this height, Deuteronomy 34 came alive. God showed Moses the land in its fullness, north through Jordan and Galilee, west to the Mediterranean, south into the Negev, and back through the southern reaches of Jordan. This was the inheritance Israel would enter, even as Moses himself would not.
Here we were reminded of Moses’ final charge. Remember. Never forget. Take the words of God and impress them upon your hearts. This was not only a geographical moment. It was a generational transition, from wilderness wandering into promise. And, this ground has witnessed many transitions.
Below Mount Nebo, Joseph mourned his father. Across this valley, Joshua led Israel through the Jordan River, into the land. From this vantage point, we could see toward Jericho, the first city of promise and resistance.
Along these same waters, Elijah handed the mantle of prophetic leadership to Elisha. Centuries later, John the Baptist would stand on these shores calling people to repentance and preparation. And here, Jesus was baptized, marking the transition from old covenant to new, from hidden years to public declaration.
The Jordan itself means descender. It is a river of movement, surrender, and change.
Our lives are marked by the same rhythm. Letting go. Receiving. Reaching forward. Dying to old ambitions and embracing new invitations from God. Formation always requires descent before ascent.
We do not yet know all that this journey will hold. But we know this. We want to be the kind of people who, when God calls our name, respond, "Here I am." Ready. Responsive. Willing to follow and obey even before we know where it will lead or what it will cost.
As the ancient phrase reminds us, solvitur ambulando. Some things are only discovered, solved, and revealed in the walking.
