Day 02 - Masada, Bedouin Experience, Tel Arad

Day Two started with a bus ride to Masada. Even our drives are full of fascinating facts, stories, and insight provided by our tour guide, Ronen. We passed shepherds tending their flocks along the way and we were able to see how the geography of Israel plays an important role in it’s history.

As we arrived at the base of the hill and prepared to ride the gondola up the steep slopes, Kevin Phillips prepared our hearts with an enthusiastic devotion that captured what we all have been experiencing… the Bible “coming alive“ as we visit these historical sites.
The ride to the top clearly showed why this location was chosen for the Masada (fortress, stronghold). The flat top of the mountain, surrounded by steep sides all around, offered strong protection from enemies. The fascinating details of its history date back to 37 BC and has been used by the Maccabees, Herod (built three separate palaces here…make up your mind Herod!), the Zealots seeking protection from Romans, and as an inspirational rallying cry for Israel students in the 1950's and 60's.

In contrast to the three minute gondola ride up the front, the long hike down the backside allowed us to walk along side of the siege ramp used by the Romans….fascinating! The air-conditioned bus ride (and more stories from Ronen) was a welcome break after the long walk down in the hot sun.

The next stop, was quite an experience as it included a camel ride, a goat herding activity, and a Bedouin tent experience. Riding the two hump camels proved to be quite the ride, especially mounting and dismounting these amazing creatures who are designed for the desert. This was followed by a competition between the men and women of herding goats out of their pen, finding them a feeding place, and herding them back to their pen. Congratulations women…well done! The highlight was watching Holly Culp pick up the little lamb and sprint it back to the pen!
We then enjoyed the shade of a Bedouin tent as we enjoyed homemade hot bread (made in front of us by a local) while discussing the importance of being both sheep (following God) and shepherds (leading others).

The next stop was Tel Arad. This ancient site was the entrance into the Promised Land. Pastor Mike explained how the Israelites possibly built a replica temple here (without God’s permission) and most likely began worshipping Asherah along with God. King Hezekiah and his grandson, King Josiah later destroyed the Asherah places of worship.
The day ended on a high note back at the hotel, which is located right on the Dead Sea (the lowest elevation on Earth). Here we covered our faces and bodies with mud, then walked into the Dead Sea. The extremely high salt content makes you float on top of the water effortlessly…an amazing experience!
We can’t wait for tomorrow!
