Day 02 - Negev: Masada, Bedouin Experience, Tel Arad, Dead Sea Swim

Day 2 on our trip started at the lowest point on the earth – the Dead Sea. You will find the Dead Sea in the Jordan Rift Valley, between the countries of Israel and Jordan. The Dead Sea at 1414 feet below sea level and a salt concentration of 34 percent sits in a vast desert region that could be seen from our first stop, which was Masada. Masada is an ancient stronghold that is located on top of a large mesa. About 1/3 of our group climbed to the top, while the majority of our group rode the cable car to the top. We learned that Masada has a long history. Initially, it was used for defense from southern invading armies. Later, Herod built a three-tiered palace at the top and used it as a warehouse for goods moving from Africa and Middle East to Europe. Finally, most People learn of Masada as the last free location of a group of zealots who take a last stand before Rome fully conquered them in AD 73.

Since we were in the desert, our next stop was to learn about and experience the Bedouin way of life in the village of the shepherds. Our group went on a camel ride learning about travel in the desert and the rules for Bedouin hospitality. While learning, we ate freshly baked bread and drank hot, sweet tea. We got to experience typical Bedouin hospitality first hand.

Our next stop was Tel Arad, one of the southern most fortresses of Judea.  King Solomon reinforced Tel Arad to protect the southern boarder of Israel against intruders. Modern archeologists determined that this structure has been destroyed and rebuilt many times over the years. They also discovered that it was set up to replicate the temple in Jerusalem.

Our final stop of the day was to float in the Dead Sea. Our entire group made the plunge. We got to experience the 34 percent salt concentration first hand!
