Day 11 - Bethsaida Overlook, Gamla, Caesarea Philippi

We started our day on the Northeastern shore of the Sea of Galilee. There, we talked about the work that Jesus and His disciples did in Decapolis (ten Roman cities filled with Hellenism). One of these works was healing the demon possessed man. As told in Mark 5, after the demon possessed man was healed, he wanted to join Jesus and Jesus said to stay and tell his story in Decapolis instead. We were reminded that stories of God’s faithfulness in our lives hold tremendous power, and can bring people to Jesus. Will we be so bold as to share our stories too?

Next, we went to Gamla, a town inhabited by the Zealots during the time of Jesus. We hiked our way to the remains of a 1st-century synagogue. There, we discussed the diverse backgrounds of the twelve disciples. They were fishermen, writers, farmers, doubters, tax collectors, and zealots. Culturally, they should have HATED each other. But, Jesus called them, and they followed their Rabbi’s command to love one another. And, in unity, to love their neighbors as well. We talked about what it would look like for all Christians to move past their differences and unite under the mission of Christ. What a beautiful picture.

After lunch, ice cream and an eagle spotting, we went to Caesarea Phillipi, a town known during the time of Jesus for its worship to the pagan god Pan. This worship took place near a large cave which the people believed to be the gates of Hades. Their worship included unimaginable immorality and engaging in darkness left and right.

Jesus brought his disciples to this place and commissioned Peter to build his church, HERE. In one of the darkest places of the world, Jesus trusts Peter to build the kingdom HERE. And you know what archaeologists uncovered during covid? A church. In the literal gates of hell. Revival HAPPENED in Caesarea Phillipi and the darkest place saw the light. As we sang the doxology overlooking the church remnants, tears filled many eyes.

It is our last night staying in Galilee, so we all soaked up the sun, swam in the fresh water, and worshiped during sunset. This is truly one of the most beautiful places in the world. We are so grateful for our time here and will savor every last moment of our last day tomorrow.
