Our Last Day

I think today will go down as a favorite for many people on the trip! Our second day in Jerusalem and final day in Israel, it was spent reflecting back on the most important lessons of the week.

We started the day on the Mount of Olives and Garden of Gethsemane, the place where Jesus spent the night before he went to Calvary. Here we worshipped and took communion, a meaningful and memorable experience for all of us.

Our next stop was the Israel museum, where we took the time to look at two significant displays. The first was a scale model of the ancient city of Jerusalem. It’s an awe-inspiring recreation of what the city would have looked like at the time of Jesus. The second was a small sampling of the Dead Sea scrolls, which were found at a location we visited on this trip: Qumran. It’s incredible to see such an important part of our history up close.

Next, we made a stop at the Holocaust museum. Believe it or not, this was probably in the top 5 sites we visited on the trip for me. It was beautifully and intentionally designed to take you through this horrific Jewish experience. I was amazed by the detail, creativity, and storytelling that was used throughout the exhibit, and if you ever make it out to Israel, I would highly recommend it.

Finally, we walked through the inner streets of the city, making our way to the Holy Sepulchre, a place of long-running religious and culture tension. This was probably a low point of the trip for me, as it was incredibly crowded and designed for tourists. It also wasn’t a very accurate display of God’s character. We don’t have to wait in line to touch the rock where he may have resurrected to experience His goodness in our lives. I’m thankful that we have a God who loves us and made a way for us to easily enter his presence.

Thankfully, that wasn’t the end of the day, because we were lead to the top floor of a building that offered a fantastic view of the city to enjoy a final meal together. It was one of the best meals of the trip, and as we ate we shared with one another our favorite moments of the trip. It was a warm and joyful environment, indicating just how close of a family we became on this trip. Many of us did not know each other when we took off. Now, after 9 days of exploring the land where God first revealed himself to us, we have a deep connection through Him.

I pray that you will one day be able to visit this land, but even if you don’t, remember that God is near and you only need to invite him into your life to have a personal relationship with him.
