Hitting the ground running!

Our first day exploring Israel was exciting to say the least! Right after landing, we piled into the tour bus. Our first destination: Gezer. This was the backdrop for the Old Testament story of Joshua and the sun standing still. As we stepped off the bus, Chris Brown took a moment to center us (after 17 hours of travel, we needed the reminder). Brown reminded us that we were walking in the Promised Land - a land set aside for God's people.

We then preceded on foot to explore some nearby ruins. The hike was beautiful as we traveled through a sea of green, lush landscape. The ruins were near a tel (a location where many generations had torn down and rebuilt on). Tels proved to be an military advantage as they usually have a higher elevation than the surrounding land. The first ruins we would take in was a tower. Our second, a city gate (with this particular gate dating back to 940 B.C.). And our third would be a site of a "high place," often mentioned in the Old Testament. They stood as places of sacrifice and worship of idols and false gods. It was overwhelming to stand in a place where so many evil acts were committed.

After visiting the ruins, we made our way back to the hotel for dinner, a hot shower, and a soft bed. Dinner was delicious as we enjoyed many Israeli traditional dishes. We ended our night on the hotel patio sharing our thoughts and aha moments from the day (if only you could have been a fly on the wall). North Coast - thank you for your prayers! Our first day was more than we could of ever imagined.

Gezer

Situated near the International Coastal Highway and guarding the primary route into the Israelite hill country, Gezer was one of the most strategic cities in the Canaanite and Israelite periods. Gezer is a prominent 33-acre site that overlooked the Aijalon Valley and the road leading through it to Jerusalem. The tel was identified as biblical Gezer in 1871 by C. Clermont-Ganneau who two years later found the first of many boundary stones inscribed with the city’s name.
