Mount Carmel

Try to imagine reading one of your favorite Bible stories while sitting on the mountaintop where the story took place. Today I had that unique opportunity. Our group visited Mount Carmel today, and as we climbed the stairs of the church located on top of the mountain, I felt anticipation at seeing the site of my favorite story from the Old Testament. And there it was. The rolling green landscape on one side, and a city on the other. I looked out in awe. We all found spots in the shade and were given time to read the Bible, and so I turned to the story of Elijah in 1 Kings 18-19. I love this story because basically, it describes Elijah going from a literal mountaintop experience to the lowest of the lows. I looked out at the scenery and stood at a peak where Elijah stood, calling out the Baal prophets. This is the place where the people said “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!” after Elijah called upon the Lord and the Lord answered. So on top of that mountain I looked out and whispered The Lord, He is God as the other people in our group gazed out at the mountain, read their Bibles, or prayed.
