Upon this rock

Qatzrin:
This was a Jewish city that was inhabited from around AD200-800. There were many original ruins from this time, but the site had been built up to recreate what would have been a normal city for the time. We were then able to see what a complete house from that timeframe looked like. We were able to walk through the streets and houses, which really brought the towns of Jesus time to life.

Katzrin

The ancient Jewish farming village of Katzrin was built around a spring, which still flows. Although there were standing ruins on the site, archaeological excavations have increased the number of accessible ancient buildings. An ancient synagogue was discovered in 1967 and excavated between 1971 and 1984. Other parts of the village were excavated beginning in 1983. Some of the buildings have been reconstructed on their ancient foundations and furnished with replicas of household goods and tools

Caesarea Philippi:
Gates of She’ol: This was the place where it is believed that Peter confirmed Jesus as the Christ, and where Jesus changed Peter’s name from Simon to Peter. Jesus then confirms Peter and claims that the church would be built upon this rock. What a great picture; that people come into the correct relationship with the Lord, and as a result their name was changed from then onward as a reminder of who the person has become. In the culture of Jesus’ time, names had great meaning. They told about your character and your authority. Satan will always call us by our sin and our past failures; Jesus calls you by your new name.

Caesarea Philippi

This abundant water supply has made the area very fertile and attractive for religious worship. Numerous temples were built at this city in the Hellenistic and Roman periods.

Tel Dan:
Dan is on the northernmost part of Israel. When the kingdom split, Dan was one of the religious centers that was set up by Rehoboam in the northern kingdom of Israel. The other religious center was found in Bethel. We were able to see where the actual temple and altar were set up. Rehoboam set these 2 worship centers up even though the actual center of worship was in Jerusalem.

Tel Dan

On the northern frontier of the kingdom, Dan was particularly well fortified. This gatehouse was built in the ninth century BCE, probably by Ahab, and is part of a series of gateways discovered.
